Bass from the ice. near Gilmanton

Bass from the ice.

Basically the same area I was casting into in the summer. It's a good deal shallower then it was in those months due to the fact that the lake level is lowered in the winter to prevent ice damage to the dam.

Baits and Tackle used near Gilmanton

Check Prices

  • I used two kinds of Powerbait here. The first were small "Red Shad" worms. The other were blue salamanders. Both were rigged "Texas Style."
  • These are the fish from the second night on the damn. There may be a repeat photo in here somewhere. I apologize, they were taken with different cameras and are stored all over the place on my various devices.
  • This one was caught on one of those purple jelly worms that I used extensively throughout the year. Once again I was using a bullet weight and an offset hook with a Texas rig.
  • Truth be told I didn’t really bother measuring them out this time, conditions aboard the kayak are a little cramped for that. Maybe I should drill a measuring board to the side. I’m going to guess that this guy was around a pound and a half. I managed to pull in all three bass on my usual power worm/brass weight rig. If I didn’t have the feeling that I’m hardly to the only person to use this combo then I’d patent it!
  • large shinner weighted
  • I used a white rocket shad while trolling.
  • jerk bait
  • nightcrawler with a bobber
  • drop shot powerbait smelt
  • i don't remember which lure i was using at the time... i will try and remember

Minnow Check Prices

  • Here is the fish I caught, which was the first fish of the day, an okay pickerel. Everybody was using live shiners on their tip ups and jig rods.
  • Here is the first pickerel I caught. Came up early in the day. Nice to have some action early to keep you interested. As usual, it took a live shiner.
  • This is the first fish I have ever caught using a tip-up device. My other ice fishing catches were done using my normal bass road sitting by a single hole in the ice. I much prefer to do things this way! It was just a small Chain Pickerel however. For bait we were using some live shiners we bought at a local shop. This is also the first time I have ever used those!

Lizard Check Prices

  • Thry just don't stop biting those plastic salamanders.
  • Although I got some nibbles on the plastic worms, all of the fish were landed on those plastic salamanders again!
  • I caught this little guy on the same rig that I caught the Smallmouth on. A blue lizard texas rig.
  • I used those blue lizards again in this shallow area. They always seem to produce well in this lake one way or the other.
  • I caught this on the same type of blue lizard that I have been hammering the Largemouth with. I was twitching it along the rocky bottom when this guy decided to play.

In-Line Spinner Check Prices

  • Also included in mess of fish attacking the fly spinner was this large sunfish. To be honest, I'm not entirely sure which species it is. I'm guessing it's a Bluegill, due to it's size and lack of red on the gill cover, or blue "war paint." I forgot how much fun catching these fish on light tackle was! The picture is not so good, but it was dark and this was the best I could do.
  • While plying the northern end of the lake by the mouths of the inlet streams, I tossed around one of those Joe's "Fly Spinners." While I didn't get any trout, it turns out that Sunnies and yellow perch couldn't get enough of it!
  • all between 7in and 4in
  • 1/8oz Rooster Tail
  • 1st was 6"
    2nd was 1-1/2lbs
    3rd was 10"

Dry Fly Check Prices

Worm Check Prices

  • My most successful night was the first one down by the damn, where I caught 8 fish (almost 9). All fish for the whole weekend were caught on my usual rig, 7 inch Berkley power worm (tequila sunrise pattern) with a brass cone weight and a 1/0 (except two fish were on a 2/0) angled worm hook.
  • Thats plastic worms not real ones for all you sticklers for the law (like myself.) These worms have a funny story though. They came to me in a tackle box given to me last year by my uncle. This box probably had not been opened for about 25 years. After 25 years black jellyworms still work!
  • I caught a total of eight bass over the three days at Sawyer Lake, one dink bass the first night, three decent ones the next, and four the night after. All fish were caught on my standard rig, the first few on Berkley Power Worms, the rest on Mann’s Jelly Worms. Dad was with me some nights, and caught two Bass himself.
  • I started off my weekend catching a few largemouth over at the Sawyer Lake dam. Nothing too big, but it was good way to break out of the rut I was in all week. Thunderstorms drove me in early, but I still managed to wrangle up three fish.
  • Make no mistake. During this time I did do a little bit of fishing off of the Sawyer Lake Dam. It's been pretty slow here however, somewhat surprisingly. This place should blow up near the beginning of July, but until then it's a slow pick of Largemouth. I used the same yamasenko rig here.
  • This matches my biggest largemouth in length, and probably in weight as well. The fish off of the damn were all caught on "Tequila Sunrise" colored power worms with a gold colored 3/16 oz. bullet weight. I also changed up the line to a lighter 6 lb. test, which may have helped.
  • As the sun fell on the first night, I was still playing around with a Texas rigged purple Jellyworm. While I was bouncing it along the bottom by the damn, I felt a solid bite. While I was reeling this "bass" in, I noticed that this particular fish was rolling. Odd, bass don't do that. I proceeded to pull up a 2 lb. hornpout! Odd to see one take a lure like that!
  • This is the first of the four fish I caught over the weekend. I arrived at the damn at about 8:10 PM. I made one cast out from the damn, and almost instantly this bass gobbled up my lure! The quality of the photo's are not as good this time around, as I had forgot to bring my camera and had to take all of these pictures with my cellphone. Once again, all fish were caught on 8 in tequila sunrise power worms. I think I need to invest in a good landing net though, as my line keeps breaking bringing them up and hand landing these guys sucks.
  • While working my way up and down the damn, I would often keep my Jelly Worm in the water. On one occasion, this impromptu land-based trolling technique yielded a fish! Not much more than a tiny yellow perch.
  • I was using those black jellyworms for both of those Bass again.

  • I took mthe advice from a local bait shop employee and put some nightcrawlers on the end of some jigs.
  • Small "trout size" worms were the bait of choice here.
  • The other reason we exhausted our supply of nightcrawlers.
  • There were so many weeds here that pulling a normal lure through simply was not an option. We dropped some worms down hoping maybe a pickerel would latch on. Alas, we draine our supply of worms on these little guys!
