Back Lake Description

Back Lake, located in Pittsburg, is 1 of the better known Trout lakes in NH. It's Trout fishing can be exceptional at times and, as a general rule, consistently good. Although it is shallow and tends to warm up earlier than other lakes in the north country, it is still an excellent Trout lake. It is accessible with 2 boat launch site on the eastern side of the lake and a public beach on the northeast side off of Beach Road. The best fishing is from May to June and from September to October. Fly-fishing is excellent on this body of water with many large fish taken yearly. Fish may be taken with wet or dry flies and it is not uncommon to have many surface fish feeding on this lake. Back Lake is stocked heavily by the NH Fish and Game Dept. and, although the fish may not be biting, there is never a lack of fish in this lake.

Covering 359 acres and centrally located in the Connecticut Lakes region is Back Lake. With an average depth of 7 feet, Back Lake is a smaller lake with numerous spring holes keeping this body of water a great spot to fish all season. Brook trout, brown trout, rainbow trout and small mouth bass inhabit these waters. Back Lake is well known for its hexagenia hatch which occurs during the last week of June into the first week of July. To access the public boat launch, take Spooner Road off US Rte 3.
