Ossipee Lake Description

Ossipee Lake, Leavitt Bay and Broad Bay may be best described as a large sandbowl filled with water. This lake is known primaril for it's good Landlocked Salmon fishing, but also has good populations of warm water game fish. Good Landlocked Salmon fishing may be had in the spring by the Bearcamp River inlet because of the large runs of Rainbow Smelt in the river in early to mid April. Ossipee is also known as a decent Burbot(aka Cusk) fishing lake. It is 1 of a few lakes in New Hampshire where Cusk fishing devices are now allowed due to the 2009 rule change. In the summer, drifted bait in the middle of the lake will take Landlocked Salmon. Rainbow Trout will seek areas with current, therefore they will be found throughout Ossipee Lake, Leavitt Bay and Broad Bay. The 2 bays also offer good fishing for Perch and Chain Pickerel. Chain Pickerel and perch fishing is also good in the 600 acre shoal in the southern portion of Ossipee Lake. There is a public launch site on the eastern shore of the lake. However, a fee is charged for parking. Average ice-out is mid April.

Ossipee Lake is located in Carroll County in eastern New Hampshire, in the communities of Ossipee and Freedom. At 3,245 acres[1], it is the sixth-largest lake located entirely in New Hampshire. The lake is fed by the West Branch (entering from the north), the Bearcamp and Lovell rivers (entering from the west), and the Pine River (from the south). Water leaves the eastern end of the lake via the Ossipee River, flowing into the Saco River in Maine.
